Bariatric (Weight Loss) Surgery – Private Health Insurance

Your bariatric surgery will be billed directly to your health fund.

There is an additional facility fee, which varies depending on the procedure. This fee allows you to have bulk-billed follow-up appointments with your surgeon.
Please note: you will need a new GP referral every 12 months to continue receiving Medicare benefits.

Surgeon Facility Fees

  • Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy – $2,500

  • Laparoscopic Mini Gastric Bypass – $3,500

  • Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass – $3,500

  • Revisional Surgery – $4,250

Please note: The facility fee does not include:

  • Surgeon consultation fees

  • Dietitian fees

  • Anaesthetist fees

  • Your hospital excess

Self-Funded Bariatric Surgery (No Private Health Insurance)

Hospital fees can vary, but as a guide:

The total cost for a Gastric Sleeve, Mini Gastric Bypass, or Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is approximately $19,000 – $23,000, depending on the procedure.

This estimate includes:

  • Surgeon’s fees

  • Anaesthetist fees

  • Hospital costs

  • Five dietitian appointments

All surgical follow-up appointments are bulk billed.

Medicare rebates can be claimed for the surgical and anaesthetist fees.

Surgery Booking Fee

To secure your surgery date, a non-refundable booking fee of $500 is required.

This fee:

  • Confirms your place on the operating list

  • Is deducted from your total surgical fees

Please note that this booking fee is non-refundable if you choose to cancel or postpone your surgery.

Dietitian Fees (Privately Insured Patients)

  • Initial Consultation – $150

  • Follow-Up Consultation – $75

If your extras cover includes dietetics, you may be able to claim part of these fees from your health fund.

Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy

These procedures are no-gap and billed directly to your health fund, with no out-of-pocket costs for the procedure itself.

General Surgical Procedures

These procedures are billed directly to your health fund. There is a facility fee of $250 payable prior to the surgery

An anaesthetist fee may apply to any procedure. This will be discussed with you directly by the anaesthetist prior to your surgery.
