Gastroscopy

A gastroscopy is a flexible camera that is passed from the mouth down the oesophagus and into the stomach then duodenum (first part of the bowel attached to the stomach).
It is performed under deep sedation by an anesthetist so that you do not experience any discomfort, and is a day only procedure.

Indications
1. Pre-operative assessment for Bariatric Surgery
2. Gastric reflux
3. Barrett’s oesophagus
4. Haematemesis/melena ( loss of blood either by vomiting or in bowel motion)
5. Weight loss
6. Iron deficiency anaemia
7. Swallowing difficulties/pain
8. Assessment for coeliac or sugar enzyme deficiency
You will be required to fast at least 4 hours prior to the procedure and be picked up by a friend or relative afterwards.
